In 1915, the United States hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition to commemorate the opening of the Panama Canal and extended invitations to countries around the world. The Chinese government accepted the invitation to participate. It selected famous local specialties from various regions, including Guizhou Province, which recommended liquors from two renowned distilleries, Ronghe (Wangmou) and Chengyi (Huamou). Because the term "distillery" did not conform to international convention, the two distilleries were temporarily named "Moutai Distillery Company" after their locations, and the liquors submitted were collectively called "Moutai Liquor." This is how the name "Moutai Liquor" originated.
At the exhibition, the Moutai liquor, packaged in an earthenware jar, was not particularly eye-catching. The Chinese supervisors, worried that such a competitive spirit would be overlooked, cleverly smashed the jar on the ground. Instantly, the aroma filled the air, attracting guests and judges from various countries to sample it. The organizing committee ultimately decided that Moutai was a world-class spirit, ranking it alongside French brandy and British whisky as one of the world's three great distilled spirits, and awarded Moutai a gold medal.
After winning the award at the competition, a dispute arose between the two distilleries, "Ronghe" and "Chengyi," over the ownership of the medal, which was unique and led to a years-long legal battle. Finally, Guizhou Governor Liu Xianshi issued a ruling: "Because the submitted liquor was from a merger of the two companies, and the medal cannot be divided or reissued, it is ultimately decided that the Moutai brand can be shared by both companies, and either can print the award honor on their packaging for promotional purposes, but other distilleries are not allowed to use it." This brought the years-long legal battle to a close.
